QUITTE (CYDONIA OBLONGA)
Characteristics: a variety related to a pear. The tree grows vigorously and resembles an ornamental tree due to its beautiful, large flowers which appear in May. Quince has incredible health benefits, it is rich in vitamins and minerals (it contains much more vitamin C than a lemon), it effectively boosts immune system, therefore, it should become a compulsory addition to our diet in the period of autumn-winter infections.
Fruit: large to extra large (weight: 0.5 – 1 kg), it resembles a pear in shape. The fruit is seldom eaten raw, it is suitable for eating after cooking or baking. The skin is yellow, lemon-coloured. The flesh is light yellow, hard, gritty, barely juicy, aromatic, strongly-perfumed. Due to its high content of pectines, its fruit is ideal for preserves, marmalades, jams, jellies, juices. Quince is also perfect as an addition to pies and tea. Quince is a natural acid which is more frequently added to juices to provide them with natural acidity.
